Wat Po Thai Traditional Massage School - Sukhumvit Branch

Thai massage training class in Thailand

About the school

This is the Wat Pho network's boutique city branch, opened in 1998 in the Phrom Phong area, and it exists largely because Japanese residents and visitors wanted the Wat Pho syllabus taught in Japanese in a comfortable central location. It is the softest landing in the Wat Pho family: air-conditioned rooms above a main building on Soi 39, small groups, and teachers seconded from the main temple school. Around twenty course options are offered, split into three tiers - full WATPO courses that carry the main-branch certificate, shorter specialised skill courses that carry the Sukhumvit branch certificate, and very short introductory sessions aimed at travellers with a spare afternoon. It suits people already living or working in Bangkok, Japanese speakers, and anyone who wants the Wat Pho curriculum without the Tha Tien crowd. It suits less well someone chasing the cheapest possible certificate, since branch pricing is quoted privately and central Bangkok overheads are reflected in it.

Accreditation

Operates as an official branch of the Wat Pho Thai Traditional Medical School, which holds Thai Ministry of Education approval. Note the distinction the branch itself makes: only the WATPO-tier courses issue the Wat Pho main-branch certificate; the specialised and introductory courses issue a Sukhumvit branch certificate, which does not carry the same standing. Thai traditional massage was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019, but that is a cultural listing, not an accreditation of any school.
